AI vs authenticity when making job applications

AI is a contentious topic. It’s impact on the wider working world can’t be underestimated. However, it’s far from perfect, particularly when it comes to using it to make job applications.

I’ve had the pleasure of engaging in a significant amount of early careers recruitment this year, with an increase in hiring apprentices, trainees, and interns across various fields. Something I’ve noticed is the growing use of AI in applications, so I wanted to share some insight.

We can tell when AI is used

It’s often quite clear when AI has been used, to craft responses on application forms. The tone, cadence, and language can change noticeably compared to other parts of your application, like your CV. This is because AI-generated responses tend to have a specific tone that can sound quite corporate and often lack the personal touch that comes from your own writing.

The limitations of AI in applications

AI isn’t sophisticated enough yet to create unique responses for each individual. Many AI-generated answers sound similar, especially when more basic AI models are used. Multiple applications for the same role can sound remarkably alike. It’s noticeable and obviously puts you at a disadvantage when you’re applying to a role with lots of competition.

Authenticity matters

The use of AI in applications is a topic of discussion across the industry. Many organisations are now including warnings on applications and implementing technology to detect AI-generated content, to encourage candidates to write individualized submissions.

Like most employers, we value authenticity, motivation, and commitment in early career applications. and while AI might seem like a helpful tool, it often fails to convey these qualities. Personally crafted responses are a much more effective way to demonstrate your enthusiasm and suitability for the role.

Seeking support

If you need help with your application, there are many resources available. Career counsellors at your school or university, local career services, and job centres can provide valuable support. There are also numerous online resources and job sites offering tips and guidance.

The right choice

We understand the pressures of applying for jobs, especially when you’re applying to multiple roles, using AI to craft your responses isn’t the best choice despite the wide and varied use of this relatively new technology. We want to see your genuine self, your unique voice, and your enthusiasm for the opportunity. While it might take more effort to write your responses, it’s the best way to stand out.
